A thumbnail is the first thing viewers see, and the wrong size leaves black bars, blurry text or a failed upload. YouTube’s recommendations have changed — many guides still say 1280 × 720, but YouTube now recommends 4K thumbnails. Here are the current numbers.

File format and file size

A 3840 × 2160 PNG is often larger than 2 MB, so if you upload from your phone, save the thumbnail as JPG and compress it.

Is 1280 × 720 still OK?

Yes. 1280 × 720 is 16:9 and well above the 640-pixel minimum, so YouTube accepts it. It is just no longer the recommended size: on large TVs and high-resolution screens, a 3840 × 2160 thumbnail looks sharper. If your design software or source images are smaller, 1920 × 1080 is a good middle ground.

How to make a thumbnail the right size

  1. Start with a screenshot or photo and open the Aspect Ratio Cropper. Choose 16:9 (or 9:16 for Shorts) and position the frame.
  2. Open the Image Resizer and set 3840 × 2160 or 1920 × 1080 (or 1280 × 720 if your source is small — enlarging a small image won’t add detail).
  3. Add your text and design in your editor of choice.
  4. If the file is too big for mobile upload, run it through the Image Compressor as JPG with a target under 2 MB.

Custom thumbnails need a verified account

You can only upload your own thumbnail once your YouTube account is verified. Until then, YouTube picks a frame from the video. Custom thumbnails for Shorts can currently only be set in YouTube Studio on a computer.
