How to Remove the Background From a Photo for Free (Transparent PNG)

Clean cut-outs make product listings look professional, thumbnails stand out and profile pictures look polished. Doing it by hand with a lasso tool takes ages. AI background removal now does it in a few seconds, and it can run entirely on your own device.
Step by step
- Open the Background Remover.
- Drop in a photo. The first time, the AI model (about 40 MB) downloads and is then cached by your browser, so later photos are much faster.
- Wait a few seconds while the subject is detected and separated.
- Choose a background: Transparent, White, Black or any custom colour.
- Download the PNG.
Which background should you choose?
| Use | Best choice |
|---|---|
| Amazon, Daraz or Shopify product listings | Pure white |
| YouTube thumbnails, posters and designs | Transparent, then place in your design app |
| CV or LinkedIn photo | Light grey or soft blue |
| Stickers and logos | Transparent |
How to get cleaner edges
- Contrast helps. A dark product on a light table, or a person in front of a plain wall, gives the sharpest outline.
- Avoid motion blur. Blurry edges stay blurry after the cut-out.
- Hair and fur are the hardest parts; even lighting from the front helps the AI keep fine strands.
- Fill the frame. A subject that takes up most of the photo keeps more detail.
Making the file smaller
Transparent PNGs can be large. If you put the subject on white for a shop, use the Image Compressor to convert it to JPG or WebP — product photos usually end up 80–90% smaller with no visible difference. Online stores often require square images, so the Aspect Ratio Cropper at 1:1 is a useful last step.
Is it private?
Yes. The model runs in your browser using WebAssembly, so your photo is processed on your phone or computer and is not uploaded to our server.
