What Is My IP Address? What It Reveals and How to Check It
Every device on the internet needs an address so data can find its way back to it. That address is your IP (Internet Protocol) address. You can see yours instantly with the IP Address Lookup tool.
Public vs private IP addresses
Your home or office router has a public IP given by your internet provider; it is what websites see. Inside your network, the router hands each phone and laptop a private IP such as 192.168.1.5. Private addresses are reused in millions of homes and can’t be reached directly from the internet.
IPv4 and IPv6
IPv4 addresses look like 203.0.113.42. There are only about 4.3 billion of them, which isn’t enough for every device in the world, so IPv6 was introduced. IPv6 addresses look like 2001:db8::8a2e:370:7334. Many mobile networks now give phones an IPv6 address.
What your IP reveals — and what it doesn’t
- It does reveal: your internet provider and an approximate location, usually the city or region.
- It does not reveal: your name, your exact address or your browsing history. Only your provider can link an IP to a customer, normally under legal process.
- Mobile data often appears to come from a different city, because traffic exits through the operator’s central gateway.
Why your IP changes
Most home connections get a dynamic IP that can change when the router restarts. Businesses that host servers or use whitelisted access often pay for a static IP that never changes.
How to check that a VPN is working
- With the VPN off, open the IP lookup and note the IP and city.
- Turn the VPN on and refresh the page.
- The IP, provider and location should now show the VPN server, not your own provider.
Related checks
If websites load slowly or calls keep dropping, the Ping & Jitter Test shows how stable your connection is. If you run a website, the DNS Lookup confirms that your domain points to the right server.
