HEIC to JPG: How to Open iPhone Photos on Windows and Android
If you have copied photos from an iPhone to a Windows laptop or tried to upload them to a website, you may have seen files ending in .HEIC that refuse to open. Here is what they are and how to deal with them.
What is a HEIC file?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the format iPhones use by default since iOS 11. It stores photos at roughly half the size of a JPG with similar quality, which saves a lot of phone storage. The downside is compatibility: many versions of Windows, some Android phones, older software and most online forms don’t accept it.
Convert HEIC to JPG in your browser
- Open the HEIC to JPG converter.
- Select one or many
.heicfiles. - Choose JPG (or PNG) and a quality — 90% is a good default.
- Download each photo, or all of them at once as a ZIP.
The conversion runs on your device, which matters for family photos and documents.
Stop your iPhone saving HEIC
If you regularly share photos with Windows or Android users, you can switch the camera format:
- Open Settings → Camera → Formats.
- Choose Most Compatible.
New photos will be saved as JPG. Existing photos stay HEIC, so convert those with the tool above. Note that JPG files take more storage space.
Other ways iPhones convert automatically
- Settings → Photos → Transfer to Mac or PC → Automatic converts photos to JPG when copied over a cable.
- Sharing a photo through most messaging apps converts it automatically, but also compresses it heavily.
After converting
Converted JPGs are often 2–4 MB. For forms and email, shrink them with the Image Compressor. If you need PNG or WebP instead, use the Image Converter.
