Australian Passport Photo Size and Dimensions (35–40 x 45–50mm)
Australian passport photos don’t have a single fixed size. Instead they must fall within a range, and the face must be a specific height. Here are the official dimensions and the rules that most often cause photos to be rejected.
Australian passport photo dimensions
| Measurement | Millimetres | Inches (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| Width | 35–40 mm | 1.38–1.57 in |
| Height | 45–50 mm | 1.77–1.97 in |
| Face (chin to crown) | 32–36 mm | 1.26–1.42 in |
The standard 35 × 45 mm passport photo used in many countries fits Australia’s range, as long as the face is 32–36 mm tall. To convert other measurements, use the Unit Converter.
Other requirements
- Number: 2 identical photos.
- Age: less than 6 months old.
- Background: plain white or light grey, contrasting with your face.
- Pose: face the camera straight on, eyes open, neutral expression. Children under 3 may have their mouth open.
- Glasses: not allowed, unless you can’t remove them for medical reasons. Vision impairment alone does not qualify.
- Print quality: good-quality colour prints made with dye sublimation, on heavy glossy paper of at least 200 gsm.
Should you make the photo yourself?
The Australian Passport Office advises against online passport photo services and mobile apps because of identity-fraud risk, and recommends a professional photo provider such as a pharmacy, post office or photo studio. The print-quality rules (dye sublimation, 200 gsm glossy paper) are also hard to meet with a home printer.
So the best approach is to have the photo taken professionally — and to know the rules so you can check the result before you leave the shop.
Checklist before you accept the photos
- Measure the print: 35–40 mm wide and 45–50 mm high.

- No shadows on your face or the background, no glare, no red eye.
- No glasses (unless medically required), hair away from your eyes.
- Both photos identical and undamaged.
