You finish a $500 project, check the dollar rate on Google, multiply — and then the amount that actually reaches your Pakistani bank account is noticeably lower. Nothing went wrong. Several small fees and rate differences sit between your client and your account. Once you know where they are, you can price your work properly and keep more of each payment.

Three different “dollar rates”

Where your money goes

  1. Platform fee — the marketplace’s service fee (Upwork, Fiverr and others), taken before the money reaches your balance.
  2. Transfer or withdrawal fee — charged by the payment service (for example Payoneer, Wise or the platform’s direct transfer) when you move money to Pakistan. Often a fixed amount per withdrawal.
  3. Conversion margin — the difference between the interbank rate and the rate actually applied when dollars become rupees, whether by the payment service or your bank.

Worked example

The numbers below are only an illustration — plug in your own platform’s fee and today’s rates:

StepAmount
Client pays$500
Platform fee 10%− $50 → $450
Withdrawal fee− $3 → $447
Converted at an example rate of 279 instead of 281 interbank$447 × 279 = Rs 124,713
What a simple “$500 × 281” suggestsRs 140,500

In this example you receive about 11% less than the headline figure. Use the Percentage Calculator to work out your own gap — then build it into your rates.

Ways to keep more

Ask your bank for a PRC

When foreign payments for services arrive through the banking channel, your bank can issue a Proceeds Realization Certificate (PRC). It records the money as earnings from exporting services. Freelancers use PRCs as proof of income when filing tax returns and when applying for loans or visas. Request them regularly rather than all at the end of the year, and speak to a tax adviser about how your income should be declared.

Quick formula

PKR received ≈ (payment − platform fee − withdrawal fee) × rate actually applied

Check the live rate with the Currency Converter, then subtract your bank’s usual margin to get a realistic estimate before you quote a client.
